3rd Annual General Meeting of the Ghana Young Academy


Accra, February o9, 2018 – The 3rd Annual General Assembly of Ghana Young Academy (GhYA) came off on February 09, 2018 at the Business Centre of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, Accra, Ghana on the theme: “The Role of Ghana’s Young Scientist in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.” Members observed a one-minute silence in honour of Prof. Francis Allotey who had passed on. Prof. Allotey was instrumental in the establishment of the GhYA.

 A welcome address was delivered by Mr. Samuel Boakye, Executive Secretary of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences. He encouraged members to work harder to promote the work of young scientists. Our Guest Lecturer was Prof. Mercy J. Newman who spoke on the sub-theme: “The current state of antibiotic resistance in Ghana and strategies to reduce the burden”. Prof. Newman, is a renowned Bacteriologist from the University of Ghana.

Members later examined how the Ghana Young Academy could contribute towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and wellbeing, with a focus on Antibiotic Resistance. Various projects bordering around antibiotic resistance and infections were planned for the year.

Leadership elections were held to vote in a new Co-Chair (Science) and Executive Committee Members.
