The Ghana Young Academy (GhYA) reached a historic milestone on Thursday, 29th January 2026, as it hosted its 10th Annual General Meeting (AGM) and 9th Induction Ceremony at the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences (GAAS) in Accra. Held under the theme “Strengthening Scientific Leadership for Sustainable Development in Ghana,” the event marked the first in-person induction since 2021.+3
A significant highlight of the day was the induction of 23 new members, the largest cohort in the Academy’s history since its launch in 2014. The new class represents a diverse range of expertise, including Food Science, Nutrition, and Food Security, Physical Sciences and Engineering, Health and Medical Sciences, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and Social Sciences and Theology.

The ceremony was led by the GhYA Executive Council, including Ing. Dr. Latifatu Mohammed (Co-Chair), Dr. Kwadwo Owusu Akuffo (Co-Chair), Prof. Jacob Kwaku Agbenorhevi (Membership and Alumni), Prof. Francis Hasford (Projects and Programs), Dr. David Azanu (Financial Secretary), and Dr. Cyril Dziedzorm Boateng (Social Media Relations/Moderator).
In her address, Co-Chair Ing. Dr. Latifatu Mohammed delivered a stirring message to the inductees, stating, “GhYA is not a title, but it is a call to service”. She urged the new members to engage beyond their individual disciplines, contribute to evidence-based policy dialogues, and actively communicate science to the public.
The programme was graced by Professor Alfred Apau Oteng-Yeboah, Vice President (Science Section) of GAAS, who challenged the inductees to look beyond academia and conduct research geared toward solving national problems. Keynote speaker Professor Christian Agyare, Provost of the College of Health Sciences at KNUST, further inspired the cohort to remain steadfast in the GhYA’s founding principles and ensure their research creates a tangible societal impact.
