4th Annual General Meeting of the Ghana Young Academy


Accra, February 08, 2019 – The 4th Annual General Meeting of Ghana Young Academy (GhYA) came off on February 08, 2019 at the Business Centre of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, Accra, Ghana on the theme: “National relevance versus global competitiveness of young scientists”. A brief activity and accounting report was given by the Chair, Dr. Priscilla K. Mante during the business meeting for existing members. Members voted to review aspects of the GhYA constitution. 

Members were welcomed by Mr. Samuel Boakye, Executive Secretary of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences. He encouraged members to work harder to promote the work of young scientists and build a concrete relationship with the Senior Academy.

Our Guest Lecturer was in the person of Prof. Isabella Quakyi who spoke on our theme. Prof. Quakyi, is a Professor of Immunology and Parasitology and the Foundation Dean of the School of Public Health (SPH), College of Health Sciences, University of Ghana (UG) and a 2014 Laureate of the prestigious African Union Kwame Nkrumah Award for Women in Science. She is also a Fellow of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences (FGA), and a Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences (FAAS)

Four new members were sworn-in. They are: Dr. Thomas Tagoe, University of Ghana; Dr. (Mrs.) Augustina Sylverken, KNUST; Dr. Salifu Azeko, Tamale Technical University; Dr. Benjamin Agyei-Tuffour, University of Ghana.

Members later proposed and discussed various projects for the year. The discussion was led by Dr. Edmund Ekuadzi, Executive Committee member.
