Member Profile – Dr. Francis Hasford

Dr. Francis Hasford is a Medical Physicist and an employee of Ghana Atomic Energy
Commission (GAEC). He has undertaken research studies aimed at improving the
diagnosis and treatment of human diseases, mostly cancers, with the use of radiation
sources.
His research work has mainly been in the subfields of nuclear medicine, diagnostic
radiology and radiotherapy (radiation treatment). Among the numerous research works
undertaken over the years, the most outstanding one has been the fusion of medical
images of different modalities (i.e., ultrasound, positron emission tomography and
computed tomography) to aid in the treatment of prostate cancers.
Dr. Hasford has also led a research team to undertake a national project to implement a
dosimetry audit of radiotherapy centers in Ghana. This has introduced improved
radiation treatment outcomes in the centers. He is currently undertaking a similar study
in diagnostic radiology centers nationally. His research output is evidenced by the
publication of over 40 peer-reviewed articles and over 15 conference presentations.
Dr. Hasford has used his position as General Secretary for the Ghana Society for
Medical Physics to promote science among young scientists, especially undergraduate
students. Also, being a lecturer and Head of the Medical Physics Department at the
School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences, University of Ghana, he has trained several
science students and advocated for improvements in the status of scientists.
