Member Profile – Dr. Kwadwo Owusu Akuffo


Dr. Akuffo completed his Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree in 2011 at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), and obtained his PhD in 2017 at the Nutrition Research Centre Ireland, Waterford Institute of Technology, Waterford, Ireland. He was then appointed as a Lecturer at the Department of Optometry & Visual Science (KNUST) in 2018, and serves as a Supervisor for both undergraduate and doctoral research theses. 

His research interests focus is on age-related eye disease, clinical trials, epidemiology, vision and nutrition. His PhD research focussed on investigating the impact of macular carotenoid and co-antioxidant supplementation on visual function in patients with early age-related macular degeneration. Dr. Akuffo has also been trained in retinal photograph grading at the Moorfields Eye Hospital Reading Centre, London, UK, and has been certified to grade cataracts using the Lens Opacities Classification System (LOCS) III by the Chylack Incorporated.

Dr. Akuffo has published over 20 scientific peer-reviewed articles in optometry, ophthalmology and vision science journals. He has also contributed to several conference proceedings in his research field. He is a Reviewer for ophthalmic journals including Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science and British Journal of Ophthalmology. 

Currently, he is collaborating with the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC; South Africa) to investigate prevalence of Eye Disease and its associated risk factors in South Africa (using data from the South African National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey ([SANHANES]). The study will assist policy makers to use a comprehensive health approach in order to address eye disease.

He has served as a member of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), and the European Academy of Optometry and Optics (EAAOO). He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (AAO), and member of the Ghana Science Association (GSA), and the Ghana Optometric Association (GOA).
